InterBase¢ç SMP 2009 FAQ
Q: What is Interbase¢ç SMP 2009
A: InterBase¢ç SMP 2009 is the only database to combine the performance benefits of a multi-generational architecture with peace of mind of log-based journaling and disaster recovery. It is a high-performance, cross-platform, Unicodeenabled SQL database platform powering millions of applications globally. Combining fast, easy installation and configuration, a small footprint, automatic crash recovery, self-tuning, and near zero maintenance requirements, InterBase SMP 2009 is ideal for embedding within turn-key applications. Out of the box SMP support (Server Edition), SQL 92 compliance, advanced data reliability and recovery, Unicode, numerous connectivity options, and support for Windows¢ç, Linux, Solaris¢â, and Macintosh platforms makes InterBase SMP 2009 perfect for high-powered, cost-effective business-critical server applications in small-to-medium enterprises.
Q: What are the highlights of InterBase SMP 2009?
A: InterBase SMP 2009 is designed to offer additional durability, improved performance and also extended support for international use. The highlights include:
  • Further improving durability and availability, InterBase SMP 2009 offers new enhancements for protection against failures and increased disaster recovery options through log-based journaling for short-term recovery, and journal archiving for long-term recovery in the occurrence of hardware system failures (Server Edition only).
  • InterBase SMP is one of the fastest native databases available, and through supporting SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) it scales to multiple CPUs, including multi-core CPUs. Performance enhancements and optimizations have been added in a number of areas, such as batch updates, and query optimizations.
  • Online Dump, or Incremental Backup, of database files allow backup to be performed easier and with minimal impact on production database operations.
  • Point-in-Time Recovery makes it possible to restore based on timestamps for greater recovery flexibility (Server Edition only).
  • Extended International character support via Unicode UCS-2 and UTF-8
Q: Which InterBase SMP Edition is right for me?
A: InterBase SMP 2009 is available in multiple editions.
InterBase SMP 2009 Server Edition features a scalable, portable, cross-platform database, ideal for mission-critical enterprise or embedded applications.
  • The Server Edition delivers high performance for applications with complex business logic and high concurrent user levels through its symmetric multiple processing support and multi-threaded architecture. Its new Journaling technology offers improved management of very large databases, point-in-time recovery as well as disaster recovery options. The flexible licensing scheme allows developers to address growing demands and also multiple deployment platforms, including Windows, Linux, Solaris, and Mac OS¢ç/X. Choose the Server Edition for applications that will be part of a networked environment; in such an environment, the central server and each simultaneously connected user must be licensed.
  • InterBase SMP 2009 Desktop Edition is a powerful, cost effective deployment solution for standalone applications.
InterBase Desktop Edition enables rapid development of sophisticated business applications. With a small operational footprint, and capabilities for automatic crash recovery and incremental backup, InterBase 2009 Desktop Edition is an ideal embedded database for broad, cost-effective deployments that lack IT support and administration resources.
The Desktop Edition does not accept connections from remote client machines. Choose the Desktop Edition for applications that will not be part of a networked environment.
  • InterBase SMP 2009 Developer Edition is designed for developers of applications leveraging either the Server or Desktop editions of InterBase. It integrates tightly with CodeGear¢â RAD Studio, Delphi¢ç, C++Builder¢ç as well as JBuilder¢ç , 3rdRail¢â, and Delphi for PHP.

Q: What are the InterBase SMP 2009 Server Simultaneous User License options?
A: InterBase SMP 2009 Server Edition is sold in configurations of 1, 5, 10, 25, or Unlimited simultaneous users. Additional Simultaneous User licenses can be purchased to increase the number of users who can simultaneously access the InterBase SMP Server.
Q: Can InterBase SMP 2009 Server Edition Simultaneous User Licenses be combined?
A: InterBase SMP Server Edition is available in 1, 5, 10, 25 and Unlimited simultaneous users options. These versions include one license for the InterBase SMP Server, and the corresponding amount of simultaneous user licenses. Additional simultaneous users can only be added by purchasing the number of desired "1 Additional Simultaneous User License" to meet your needs. Note that purchasing a 5-User and a 10-User InterBase SMP Server product will not allow 15 simultaneous users to access the InterBase SMP Server. To add additional simultaneous users, you must purchase the appropriate amount of "1 Additional Simultaneous User License" to meet your requirements. ISVs, OEMs, VARs, and other volume buyers should contact a CodeGear sales representative for other licensing options.
